Touring through South Africa

July 18, 2018

A rental car is the perfect way to get a (small) taste of the beauty of this immense country. In the area between Cape Town and Kruger National Park, the ninth largest country of the African continent offers the perfect mix of safari, culture and beach fun.

First of all you need to decide exactly what you would like to do in South Africa. From Johannesburg to Cape Town it’s 1500 km; another 400 km separate Johannesburg from Kruger National Park and the border with Mozambique. In other words, combining the country’s main attractions takes time. And if you want to avoid spending most of that time behind the wheel we recommend spending an average of two nights in the same location. Specialised travel organisations work with a large number of local B&Bs run by Flemish emigrants, or you can spend the night at any number of wine estates.

Also, there’s no shortage of scenic driving routes in this country. The Panorama route runs from Johannesburg to the Cape, the Garden Route hugs the coast from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and is by far the most popular route and Chapman's Peak Drive also comes highly recommended. This winding road is part of the route that connects Cape Town with the Cape of Good Hope. You can supplement this list according to your travel plans.

Good to know: petrol in South Africa is about 50% cheaper, the road infrastructure is well-developed but remember to drive on the left. Eating out can cost you as little as € 15. So what are you waiting for?
